Kyoto’s wooden terraces along the Kamo River, or “yuka” as they’re known, are one of the city’s best spots for a little al fresco summer dining. A tradition since the late 16th century, the yuka are where the people of Kyoto have always headed to enjoy the summer sun, relax and indulge their appetites. Today, restaurants continue to thrive along the banks of the Kamo, and the good news is, we’re here to introduce you to some of the best.
Satsuki (Japanese Restaurant)
This restaurant serves course menus of traditional Kyoto cuisine, centered on fish and vegetable dishes. With around eight or nine dishes to each meal, you certainly won’t go hungry. The pike eels and kamo eggplants come particularly recommended.

Prego Tokichi (Italian Restaurant)
A modern concept restaurant harmoniously blending local seasonal ingredients and Italian recipes. This place offers lunch, dinner, party set plans and a buffet option.

Hiro: Kiyamachi branch (Yakiniku Restaurant)
A famous yakiniku (BBQ) restaurant with several branches in Kyoto. The Kiyamachi branch, with its yuka, is probably the best in the city. The Japanese Wagyu beef is a delight.

Bistro Sumire Chinese (Chinese Restaurant)
A Chinese restaurant that offers both set menu and a la carte options. Some of our favourites include the original Hong Kong dim sum and the grilled pork.

Funatsuru Kyoto Kamogawa Resort (French Restaurant)
This newly renovated restaurant offers five-star Kyoto-French cuisine for both lunch and dinner. The 140-year-old building has long been a Kamo River landmark, now allowing visitors to gorge on fine French food as they gaze out over the water.

Torihatsu Kamogawa (Hot Pot)
A homely restaurant serving traditional hot pot made using local ingredients. The restaurant’s signature is its homemade milky soup for the hot pot, served with chicken, tofu and vegetables.

Inayoshi (Steak and Sukiyaki)
The highlight of Inayoshi’s menu is the Kyoto Keiseki beef steak: made from the best local cattle and best enjoyed with a selection from the restaurant’s extensive wine list. Visit with a group and try the sukiyaki or shabu shabu which also come highly recommended.

With 30 years of practice, it’s no surprise Kappa serves some of the best sushi in the city. Their specialties include Noguji (tilefish), Maguro (bluefin tuna) and Toro (fatty tuna).

Bar Atlantis (Shot Bar)
A riverside shot bar which offers perfect views of the Kamo River and more than 400 types of liquor to choose from. To soak up the alcohol, choose from menu options such as fish and chip, homemade stews and fresh oysters.

Baan Rim Naam
A Thai home-style restaurant on the banks of the river serving a variety of authentic Thai food. Signature dishes like Tomyamkung (hot and sour river prawn soup), Tomkhagai (hot and sour chicken coconut soup) and Keangkiewwan (green curry chicken) are a real treat. A vegetarian menu is also available.
